Putrajaya, Malaysia, 16 MARCH 2015 – 4 days, 17 hot air balloons piloted by balloonists of 11 different nationalities and some 300,000 visitors later, the 7th Putrajaya International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta (PIHABF) closed on a high note with balloonists and Fiesta crew members cheering along with visitors as music played and fireworks burst in the skyline above.

Held from Thursday-Sunday, 12-15 March 2015, the Fiesta’s homeground at Precinct 2, Putrajaya saw pleasant weather over the 4 days, with daily balloon take-offs filling the airspace with whimsical shapes and colours.

Fire up the balloon

Among the favourite balloons this year were the Van Gogh balloon flown by balloonist Tonn Rentier of Holland, and a Humpty-Dumpty balloon flown by returning balloonist Gary Moore from USA who expressed his pleasure in coming back to Putrajaya: “I have been to this event 4 times now, though this is my first time flying Humpty Dumpty. Ever since the first year I participated this Fiesta has been a very well-run event from the start. Putrajaya is a very beautiful and unique place to fly a balloon with the nice architecture such as the bridge around – I would come back anytime,” he said.

The Fiesta also saw a first time participation from a “penguin in a Hawaiian shirt”-shaped balloon named Snobird flown by Richard Lawhorm from the USA, who was charmed by the Malaysian hospitality he received: “The Fiesta is in an area that’s nice to fly in with a few different landing spots to choose from. Furthermore the Malaysian people have been very friendly, helpful and welcoming,” said the Snobird pilot.

Flying over Putrajaya beautiful skyline

This year’s Fiesta featured not just an amazing line-up of international balloonists but also first-time and upgraded activities that attracted visitors of all ages and from all walks of life. Whether in the picnic area or not, the entirety of the Fiesta grounds was strewn with families setting up picnic mats on the grass, trying to secure themselves a good viewing spot of the balloons flying overhead.

Needless to say, the Fiesta continued to attract both Malaysian and international visitors, with the weekend seeing an influx in the number of visitors as many residents drove in to Putrajaya from neighboring states in Peninsula Malaysia. The focal point of the Fiesta, the Blue Zone and launch field, was especially busy as the entire perimeter of the zone was crowded with spectators taking pictures of themselves with their favourite balloons.

Tickets to enter the launch zone for those who wanted to see the balloons up close were quick to sell out, with hundreds of balloon enthusiasts purchasing their tickets online. Avid Fiesta goers were also wise to arrive early for on-ground ticket purchases, some lining up from before 6am to see the morning flight of balloons, and the evening tickets selling out by mid-afternoon. Newly introduced attraction MyBalloonClub, a premium viewing experience at Monumen Alaf Baru that included a gourmet breakfast and live jazz music, also sold out quickly, with some MyBalloonClub patrons also receiving tethered hot air balloon rides.
